BEAM grants MEIL scholarships to 90 DepEd teachers
The Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM) awarded 90 scholarships public school teachers of Regions XI, XII and ARRM for Master of Education in Instructional Leadership (MEIL) at the University of Southeastern Philippines.Â
This is in line with the thrust of BEAM in helping the teachers across the regions to become more effective in their roles as educators and leaders by providing them with opportunity for continuing professional education.
The MEIL program is conceptualized through the Mindanao eLearning Space, a consortium of Department of Education, BEAM and University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP). It is delivered in a blended eLearning mode to give the students more time to study on their own rather than attending classes every Saturday.
The program is offered in trimester and the scholars are expected to finish their postgraduate degree in 16 months. As stipulated in the contract, the grantees are given only two (2) years to finish their studies, otherwise they will refund the amount granted to them.
The scholars received their scholarship grants in a simple ceremony last February 23, 2008 at the University of Southeastern Philippines. Present during the activity were Dr. Ian D’Arcy Walsh, BEAM Australian Project Director, Dr. Perfecto Alibin, USEP President, Dr. Fe delos Reyes, Acting ARD, DepEd XI, Alma Castillo, BEAM Deputy Philippine Project Manager for Region XI and Dr. Felomino Gargar, Dean, College of Education, USEP . In a speech he delivered to the new batch of MEIL scholars,   Dr. Ian D’Arcy Walsh, BEAM Australian Project Director said that “he is very happy with the positive response of the teachers to take part in the program.â€
There were around 200 applicants across the three regions but the screening committee has chosen only 90 scholars. The applicants were selected based on their length of service, performance, age and the recommendation of their school heads and the Schools Division Superintendents (SDS).
